Project Overview
3D Aluminium was appointed by E-ACT Academies Head Office as the Principal Contractor to undertake a comprehensive window and door replacement programme at Blackley E-ACT Academy in Manchester.
The project involved the replacement of a wide variety of glazing elements across the academy, including standard windows, high-level windows, circular pivot windows, and large arched feature windows. The objective was to improve thermal performance, security, and functionality while maintaining the character and appearance of the existing buildings. The designs incorporated modern Georgian bar detailing to complement the academy’s existing architecture and maintain consistency with neighbouring properties. Solar control glazing was specified throughout the project to improve internal comfort, reduce solar gain, and enhance the overall thermal performance of the building.
The preservation of the site’s character and appearance was essential in maintaining and reflecting the historical significance of the building. This is illustrated through its timeline:
- 1931: Purpose-built as an elementary/primary school
- 1931–2011: Operated as a local authority school, later known as Victoria Avenue Community Primary School
- 2012–present: Restructured, rebranded, and incorporated into the E-ACT Academies Trust, reopening as E-ACT Blackley Academy on 1 January 2012
Due to the varied elevations and window configurations, works were undertaken using a combination of:
- Scissor lifts
- Cherry pickers
- Mobile access towers
- Fixed scaffolding within the courtyard areas
Careful planning and coordination ensured all works were completed safely and efficiently while maintaining the day-to-day operation of the academy.
The project was delivered within a fully operational school environment, requiring close collaboration with academy staff throughout the programme.
Several phases of the works coincided with SATs examinations. To minimise disruption, 3D Aluminium worked closely with the school leadership team to carefully schedule activities, ensuring examination periods were protected. This approach was highly successful and received positive feedback from the school.
Particular attention was also given to the courtyard area, which serves as an important outdoor space for SEN pupils. This section of the project was prioritised to ensure the playground could be returned to full operation as quickly as possible.
One of the primary challenges involved telephone cables running along the front elevation of the building. Due to programme constraints and the cost implications associated with relocating the cables, an alternative solution was required. Through detailed planning and careful execution, 3D Aluminium successfully completed the window replacement works around the existing services without disruption or damage, ensuring the project programme remained on track.
The erection and dismantling of scaffolding also took place during term time. Effective communication and planning with the school enabled materials to be moved into working areas either before the school day commenced or during lesson times, avoiding disruption to students and staff.
Through proactive communication, careful planning, and a collaborative approach with academy leadership, 3D Aluminium successfully delivered a complex refurbishment project within a live educational environment, achieving excellent results for both E-ACT Academies and Blackley E-ACT Academy.
