Project Overview
The scheme involved the fabrication and installation of high-performance glazing systems for a new 675m², two-storey Sixth Form facility at Windsor Girls School. The building provides a modern learning environment, incorporating classrooms, refreshment areas, and collaborative spaces designed to support student development.
Our team delivered a complete aluminium glazing package, including the fabrication and installation of windows and doors. The project integrated the Comar 9Pi Window Wall system, enhancing both thermal efficiency and structural performance.
A key design feature was the recessed positioning of the fenestration within the external envelope, incorporating a deep 290mm mullion profile. This approach helped to minimise solar gain, reducing glare and overheating while improving internal comfort throughout the day.
The site presented unique architectural considerations, including several mature trees, most notably a large oak located in close proximity to the building. Edgingtons Architects responded to this by developing a design that both retained and drew inspiration from the tree. This is reflected in the articulation of the brickwork at ground and first floor level, echoing the textures of the trunk and canopy.
The project incorporates a traditional bricklaying pattern implemented at first floor level, known as Flemish bond brickwork with expressed headers. While seldom used in contemporary construction, this technique maintains the necessary structural integrity while introducing a distinctive visual rhythm. Its application creates a distinctive façade while maintaining a cohesive, high-quality, aesthetic in line with the overall design intent.
A standout moment for the project was the opening of the building, being officially opened by a member of the British Royal Family.
